the file is large.] Paul Graham writes: Love the 1970s black and white sci-fi cover (picture of what exactly?). Nice to see many of the familiar staff names surviving into the 1970s. Here we have the announcement of the impending change to "John Ruskin High" and co-education as part of a comprehensive system (page 3), obituaries of Mr. "Spike" Hancock and Mr. Alexander (page 4), and a profile of Mrs. Smith, the first female teacher, on page 10. On page 7 there is a lovely picture of "Doc" James in his familiar garb of waistcoat and what looks like corduroy trousers conducting the orchestra in the school hall. I think Mr. Hancock would have approved of the enthusiasm but not the informal manner, nor the type of music reviewed on page 14! Times they are a-changin', although old favourites such as the 15 Society (page 29) and the Mock Elections (page 37) continue. Pages 11, 12, and 13 reveal the life and times of Steve Kember, who played for many years for Crystal Palace FC. It's reassuring to know that he felt the same about Mr. "Smuts" Smith as PE teacher as the rest of us. Finally, take a trip down memory lane with the Barclays Bank advert on page 41. Did we really dress like that in 1971? |
