July 1938 School Magazine

    Roger Adcock (JRGS (1963-67) and Trevor Adcock JRGS (1966-72) write: "We found this edition in our father's papers amongst a pile of school magazines. Brian Arthur Adcock (JRCS 1931-36/37) was in form VC - Mr. William 'Wally' Cracknell's class - during 1936.
   "Our Dad left the school to work in the City at Westminster Bank. He joined the RAF in WW2 and spent five years in Far East fighting his way up into Burma and the like. He was one of the first troops into a Japanese POW camp to release the prisoners. The memory of what he saw at aged 25 scarred his mind, and we never had anything 'Made in Japan' in the house!
   "On return and demobalisation in 1946 he returned to Westminster Bank with credits for his war service and was hence able to retire early in 1978. He passed away in 1986."

Paul Graham (JRGS 1959-66) adds: "This is a fascinating document. Despite a school trip to Paris, there is absolutely no hint of the world political situation in 1938 or the terrible war to come the next year. Pages 1 and page 21 mention a move scheduled for September 1939 on to a new site as the 'Addiscombe Grammar School'. Maybe this was cut short by the war, but I don’t recall ever hearing about this before. It was only three years after the move to Tamworth Road. Does anybody know where the planned Addiscombe site was?
   "I see that Sports Day, described on page 18, was enlivened by Morris and Sword Dancing by Fourth Formers and Father’s balloon dribbling – I wonder what Charles Smith would have made of this?"
