FROM THE CROYDON ARCHIVE - December 2008 A Field Trip to Thursley Common Ecological Trail during 1964/65, with (left-to-right): John Cobley, John Brightwell, Peter Hylands, John Rivers and Mr. Ian Kay, who taught A-Level Botany at the school and served as Assistant Biology Master. Mr. Kay joined JRGS in September 1962 following training at Sir John Cass College. In 1967 he emigrated to Ghana. John Cobley (JRGS 1958-65) adds: Sadly, John Rivers died of a brain tumour at about 44 years old. It might be worth celebrating the life of John Rivers with this picture; he was a man of whom JRGS should be exceptionally proud. My hunch is that it was a Botany Field Trip since the ecology of plants is what you would mainly see on a trail. Copyright Croydon Council.
